Making the Move to the Top Step

May 12, 2009

Edmonton Alberta native Mike Forest will fulfill a dream this coming weekend when he steps up to the Daytona Prototype class in the Grand Am Rolex race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in Monterey, California. Having driven in many other series, the prototype car will be Forest’s first race at the highest level of the sport.

"I cannot get across how excited I am. Racing has been a very rewarding and enjoyable endeavour but extremely difficult. So to make it up to the top step of the ladder is a big accomplishment for me. It doesn’t stop here; the goal is to win at the highest level. I’m just one step closer to fulfilling that now," Forest says.

At the Daytona 24 hr season opener the Grand Am Rolex series (recently acquired by NASCAR) had such famous racing names as Juan Pablo Montoya (F1 race winner), Jimmie Johnson (3 time NASCAR champion), Helio Castroneves (IRL & Indy 500 winner), Christiano da Matta (F1), Jimmie Vasser (CART champion), Paul Tracy (Champ Car champion), Danica Patrick (IRL race winner) as well as many other LeMans and ALMS winners, F3000 champions and European touring car champions. It is one of the only series worldwide where racers of all backgrounds come to compete against one another. Boasting car counts of 45 to 65 it is one of the greatest racing spectacles. Visiting some of North America’s great racing venues like Laguna Seca, Daytona International Speedway, Montreal’s F1 circuit as well as live TV coverage on SPEED channel provides the series with great exposure.

Forest will be driving Beyer Racing’s #13 Riley/Pontiac with co-driver Ricky Taylor, son of Daytona 24 hour winner Wayne Taylor, with sponsorship from Lennox/Brach’s. Forest will bring personal sponsors Dynacor Media & Earth Water along with him.

The 500 horsepower, 2000 lbs prototypes are mid engine purpose built race cars reaching speeds in excess of 315 KM/H (195 MPH). They create more than their weight in down force effectively enabling them to run upside down making them one of the quickest race cars in all of auto racing.

Forest hopes that his 10 races in the GT class in the Grand Am Rolex series will prepare him for the 3 hour race. With only 15 laps of testing in the prototype prior to the weekend, Forest will truly be a rookie amongst the sharks but is looking forward to the opportunity.
