BAD LUCK STRUCK STARWORKS DRIVERS IN CANADA
Aug 30, 2010With only two races to go in the 2010 Rolex Series championship, everything was still possible. The team started the weekend off as one of the fastest cars on track and headed into the race optimistic for their first win of the season. Unfortunately everything changed 8 laps into the race when a ring and pinion explosion destroyed the team's hopes for a win and their run at the driver championship. Ryan Dalziel, who was in contention for the championship now moves down into 3rd position. Mike Forest remains in 5th place, but lost the points cushion.
On Friday afternoon, Mike Forest qualified the #8 Starworks Motorsport BMW Riley in 8th place. A discovery overnight forced the team to change the engine on race day, by the rule book they would have to start last. After a great series of laps, a number of positions gained and a first pit stop for a splash of fuel scheduled in Bill Riley's potentially winning strategy, Mike felt that something broke in the back and lost all power. He was towed back to the pits and the car was not able to rejoin the race. The Starworks Motorsport Corsa Car Care finished second last in DP.
"Today was not our day," said Mike Forest after the race. "The guys did a terrific job getting the engine changed out and we knew we had a fast car after our performance on Friday. As soon as the mechanical failure happened in the race, I knew it was a big one, one that was not going to be able to be fixed. I feel terrible for Ryan as it hurts his second position in the driver championship, but we are not out of it yet so we just need to regroup and work towards a good result in Utah in two weeks," added Forest.
Dalziel was very upset after the race since he was not able to drive because of the unfortunate incident. "I am gutted," Dalziel declared after the event. "We were so fast all weekend and for whatever reason Starworks was denied a good run in Montreal. I really believe we could have won this one, after being fastest in final practice. All we can do now is win Miller and try to salvage something," concluded Dalziel.
Practice and qualifying for the season-ending Utah 250 will be held on Friday, Sept. 10. The season finale is set to take the green flag at 2 p.m. MT (SPEED, live). The final race will be crucial for Dalziel and Forest who can both improve their standings in the driver championship in the final race of the 2010 Rolex Series season.
